The right material depends on the job, and your builder, engineer or plans may name one. Some general guidance:
Fill dirt is what you order to raise or level a lot, build up a pad, or fill a low spot. We deliver both brown and white fill dirt. If your plans or your builder specify one, tell us when you order. If you are not sure, describe the project and ask.
Sand, gravel, crushed base rock, stone and other aggregates are used in construction and landscaping, such as bases for driveways and slabs, drainage and finish work. Florida’s Department of Environmental Protection notes that limestone and shell materials are generally used as fill, crushed stone and aggregate, and that the type and quality of the material determine its use. Once we have that, the process is simple: we confirm the material and amount, review the delivery address and access, coordinate loading and timing, haul the material to your site, and unload where site conditions allow.
Truck access, turning space, overhead clearance, ground conditions and the unloading area all affect a delivery. Checking them in advance prevents delays and protects your property. Overhead wires and low branches matter, and so does soft ground. The National Weather Service says the South Florida wet season runs May 15 to October 15, and soft ground in those months can make access harder.
Fill is measured in cubic yards. The basic math is length times width times depth, all in feet, divided by 27. For example, a pad 60 feet by 40 feet raised 2 feet is 60 x 40 x 2 = 4,800 cubic feet, or about 178 cubic yards.

Fill is often one step in a bigger sequence. Raising a lot usually follows land clearing and grading and root raking, and it comes before the compacted pad. In Collier County, a signed and sealed compaction report is required before a certificate of occupancy (see Collier’s page on resolving permit conditions). A permit may also apply to the fill itself, so check with the county before fill goes in. Lee County, for example, says owners may not fill, divert or block natural flowways.
